Each level is designed as a chess game, challenging you to strategically build platforms and climb higher and higher. But beware, just like in a game of chess, one wrong move can send you tumbling back down to the bottom and force you to start over. It takes both timing and patience to master the movement of your pawn and conquer each level. And it's not just about platforming skills - even a single mistake in the chess game can set you back!
But fear not, Who Wears the Crown? has something for everyone. Not a fan of rage games but love chess? No problem! The Casual difficulty setting allows you to turn off jump failures and focuses more on puzzle-solving than platforming. And if you're a puzzle platformer fan but not as skilled at chess, don't worry - the game offers customizable settings to adjust the difficulty of the chess games to your liking.
If you're looking for a real challenge to put your skills to the test, Who Wears the Crown? has it all. From procedurally generated chess boards to conquer, to various game modes that cater to different play styles.
Game Modes
Adventure
The Adventure mode is the main game mode in Who Wears the Crown?. Start from the bottom of the map and make your way up to claim the crown at the very top. The map is filled with different chess games of varying difficulties, suitable for all skill levels. But be prepared to face the Stockfish chess engine, so put on your thinking cap! There are three main difficulties to choose from:
- Casual - 1000 Stockfish Elo, jump failure turned off, resets/restarts go to your current section
- Normal - 1300 Stockfish Elo, jump failure turned on, resets/restarts go to your current section
- Immortal - 1600 Stockfish Elo, jump failure turned on, resets/restarts go to the beginning of the level
Use your chess skills to outsmart Stockfish and gain power-ups to help you navigate through difficult boards!
Stacks
The Stacks game mode is similar to Adventure mode, but with a focus on puzzles and shorter levels. There are seven boards stacked on top of each other, and your goal is to climb them as quickly as possible. There are three main stacks to choose from:
- Modern Classics - Games from recent history
- Influencers - Famous games played by internet celebrities
- Endless - Procedurally generated games based on a seed value
Highscores
Completing each Adventure and Stacks map will enter you into a highscores list, where your fastest time will be recorded. If you're the fastest player to complete a level, your name will be displayed on the crown at the top of each level for everyone to see!
