About the game
OVERLORDSGS
Overlord is a standalone game that covers the operations of World War II in Normandy, from June 6th, 1944 to the end of August. The game utilizes a system of 3-day turns to cover the entire operation in Normandy, starting with D-Day.
As the German forces, your objective is to hold the front for as long as possible, as each week gained may increase the chances of survival for the Reich. As the Allied commander, you must strategically use American, Canadian, British, and French forces to establish a strong foothold and break out from Normandy towards Paris and the enemy's heartland, potentially winning the war by Christmas.
The Scenarios
The goal of the game is to recreate the different phases of the battle in Normandy through various scenarios:
- Grand Campaign: This scenario covers the entire campaign, starting with the first operations on June 6th and lasting until the last days of August. It consists of 30 turns, each representing 3 days, from June 6th to September 3rd, 1944.
- Bocage: This shorter post-landing campaign focuses on the difficult fight in the Normandy bocage from June 30th to the last days of August. It consists of 22 turns, each representing 3 days, from June 30th to September 3rd, 1944.
- Race for Cherbourg: In this scenario, the Allies must quickly secure the deep-water port of Cherbourg to ensure the success of their campaign. Can they reach it in time, or will the Germans defend it long enough to create a logistical nightmare for the enemy? This scenario lasts 4 weeks, from June 6th to June 26th, 1944.
- Operation Cobra: This scenario covers the famous operation that led to the American forces under Patton and Bradley breaking out from Normandy after defeating the German front at Avranches. It consists of 15 turns, representing 7 weeks, from July 2nd to August 18th, 1944.
Additional scenarios, such as the Battle of Caen or the Mortain/Falaise campaign, may be added in the future based on the success of the game and player demand.
Scale
The game scale is at the brigade or divisional level for land units on both sides, with smaller units (such as garrisons and local defenses) also present. Air units and naval support, only available to the Allies, are treated in groups. Other items, such as fortifications and supply units (wagons and depots), are also present in significant numbers.
Balance
Neither side has a specific advantage in the game. Both are equally playable and enjoyable once you understand their strengths and weaknesses. Detailed scenario information sheets are available to help you get into the game.
One player represents the German forces, including various land units from the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and Waffen SS. The other player commands an array of American, British, Canadian, Polish, and French troops fighting for the Allies.
The German forces have high-quality troops but lack air support. However, they have solid defensive positions and benefit from the natural terrain advantages in Normandy, such as marshes, woods, forests, and the infamous 'Bocage Normand.' At key moments, they may have local superiority and can put the Allies in difficult situations.
The Allied forces have overwhelming air superiority but must secure key points early on, including uniting their beachheads and securing a safe supply source by holding a port. Their reinforcements and numbers will ultimately determine their success, unless the Germans skillfully use the terrain and weather to their advantage. The importance of weather (which can hinder air superiority) and supply (which greatly affects the Allies) must not be underestimated, as they can turn the campaign into a war of position, similar to World War I, rather than the expected fast and strong Blitzkrieg.
