About the game
Step into the dark warmth of the mind's eye and use all your focus to carefully guide your thoughts along perilous mental threads. Resist compulsion and distraction to break through your fears and doubts, and reveal the celestial clarity that lies beyond.
Dichotomy is an artistic experience set in an abstract, cosmic representation of the mind. It aims to provide players with an empathetic understanding of OCD by allowing them to experience their surroundings as someone with OCD would. This is achieved through a series of rhythm game levels, each designed around the five main types of OCD. Each level manipulates the player's focus into a similar pattern to that of a sufferer of the corresponding OCD type.
On each level, players must navigate an orb along a series of threads, collecting beads to power it up before using it to break through a shell blocking out the sky. However, they must also avoid running into mines or holding the orb for too long, as this will cause it to shrink into nothing. This mirrors the experience of a person with OCD, who must avoid obsessing over a thought for too long to prevent becoming trapped in a mental loop of decision paralysis and rumination.
Unique power-ups are available on each level, offering quick boosts to player performance. However, these power-ups also bring hidden consequences, similar to how compulsive actions bring temporary relief to OCD sufferers but ultimately drain their quality of life with repeated use.
